The liner is the part of the chimney that actually carries smoke and gases out of your home. When clay flue tiles crack, or when an older Kansas City chimney has no liner at all, heat and carbon monoxide can reach the framing and living space. Relining with a stainless steel liner restores a continuous, sealed flue without tearing the chimney apart.
Bison installs UL-listed stainless steel liners for wood-burning fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, and for gas furnaces and water heaters that vent through a masonry chimney. Every liner comes with a new cap and a top plate, and we size it to the appliance, not to what happens to fit.

When a chimney needs to be relined
Cracked or missing clay flue tiles are the most common reason. A Level 2 camera inspection finds them, and once a tile is cracked the flue can no longer contain a chimney fire or keep gases where they belong.
A new high-efficiency furnace or water heater is the second most common reason. Modern appliances produce cooler, wetter exhaust that condenses inside an oversized masonry flue and eats the mortar. Building code requires the flue to be properly sized, and a stainless liner is how that gets done.
Wood stove and fireplace inserts always need a dedicated, insulated liner running from the appliance to the top of the chimney. Without it the insert drafts poorly and creosote builds up in the smoke chamber where it cannot be cleaned.
Stainless steel vs. other relining options
Flexible stainless steel is the workhorse: it installs in a day, follows offsets in the flue, and carries a lifetime warranty when installed correctly. Rigid stainless is used for straight runs. Cast-in-place and clay tile replacement are options for specific situations, and we will tell you when one of them is the better choice.
