The fireplace is the part of the system you actually see, and it needs care too. Gas fireplaces need their burner, pilot and thermocouple cleaned and their glass gasket checked every year. Wood-burning fireboxes crack their refractory panels and firebrick. Wood stoves and inserts need their baffles, gaskets and liners cleaned to keep drafting safely.

Gas fireplace service: what a tune-up covers
Dust and spider webs on the pilot assembly are the most common reason a gas fireplace will not light. During a tune-up we remove the glass, clean the burner ports and pilot, test the thermocouple and thermopile output, check the gasket seal, reposition the logs to the manufacturer layout so flames do not soot, clean the glass with the correct cleaner, and test for carbon monoxide at the vent. We also check the vent termination outside, which is where birds and wasps like to build.
Wood stoves and inserts
Inserts and stoves burn hotter and longer than an open fireplace, which means more creosote in a smaller flue. We pull the baffle, sweep the liner from the top, vacuum the stove body, check the door and glass gaskets with a dollar-bill test, and inspect the liner connection. If your insert was installed with a "direct connect" or no liner at all, we will show you why a full liner is the fix for smoking and poor draft.

How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?
Once a year, ideally before heating season. Manufacturers require annual service to keep the warranty valid, and it is the only time anyone checks for carbon monoxide leaks.
Why is my gas fireplace glass black?
Sooting is almost always logs that have been moved out of position so flames touch them, or a burner with clogged ports. Both are fixed in a tune-up.
Can you replace the cracked panels in my fireplace?
Yes. Refractory panels for factory-built fireplaces and firebrick for masonry fireboxes are stocked or ordered by model, and replacement usually takes one visit.
